If you’re not already aware, last year we took on an allotment on the Percy Street site. This has become a wonderful community initiative where volunteers and young people have been working together to transform the space from a disused, abandoned and unloved plot into a cared‑for, developed and productive area. It is truly a place of transformation.
Although still very much in its development stage, the allotment is a space where young people can experience and enjoy nature, make time for the outdoors, learn about the natural world, and help create a place where nature can thrive. It also offers fantastic opportunities for skills development and even a space for creative expression.
This summer, we are delighted to expand the opportunity so that many more young people can enjoy and benefit from this fabulous project. Group numbers must remain small, but we are running two sessions for 10–12 year olds and two sessions for 13-18 year olds. You are welcome to sign up for both sessions for the relevant age group, although we may need to allocate just one session per child so everyone has the chance to take part.
Some of the tasks to experience include: Planting, weeding, nurturing, and a special activity where those who come have a chance of a bit of personal creativity.
For the two 10-12yr groups....
One section of the allotment is our “creative area” and this is where art and craft and nature combine. Broken items and disused pieces of wood, and even rubbish, can be upcycled to create garden features – or in our case – “allotment” features.
The fence, when built, can be painted – depicting seasons and nature. A leaky boat is in the process of being painted and will be planted out or even made into a seating feature. There is room for the young people to create and bring in their own ideas
If the weather is not suitable for allotment activities, we will run a session at AYP instead, focusing on creativity, upcycling and nature‑themed projects within the space we have indoors. So nothing is lost — there will still be plenty of opportunities to learn about nature and contribute to the allotment project.
For the two 13-18yr groups....
Within these sessions, there is a special opportunity for young people to gain some woodworking skills as well. Dave Cook has been working with young people in our allotment for several weeks, specifically supporting them to experience and learn woodworking – namely in designing and making fences, raised beds and furniture.

If the weather is not suitable for allotment activities, we will sadly have to cancel the session altogether, but will look to give another opportunity again.
We will provide full directions once your place is confirmed, but please note that we will be asking attendees to meet at the allotment and leave from there, rather than from AYP.
Additional Information
Health & Safety is always a key concern for us, and within the allotment some risks are naturally higher. Therefore, we must stipulate that attendees wear suitable PPE for the tasks, including strong, sturdy footwear. Please provide shoe size at the time of booking so we can source the correct size for everyone. If work boots are already owned, feel free to let us know by email.
Long trousers are strongly advisable.
