CV - C - Me

  • UK businesses use A4 paper. It’s the size people comfortable with, so use it as well.
  • Text should be on one the page only, with wide borders and plenty of space.
  • Most CVs are no more than two pages long.
  • Relevant information should be easily put in different sections, qualifications, work experience, personal interests, personal details, etc. These should be clearly marked and separated; don’t force the reader to have to search for any information - and make sure the most recent activities are placed first.
  • Pay attention to the details including spelling. Not including your home postcode, or the correct dialling code in your telephone number, could be enough to get you rejected on the first reading.
Create a

Winning CV

IT’S POSSIBLY THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL YOU’LL HAVE WHEN LOOKING FOR A JOB, SO IT’S IMPORTANT TO GET IT RIGHT! HOW CAN YOU ENSURE THAT YOUR CV DOES ITS JOB AND GETS YOU NOTICED?

This is one of the principal requirements of anyone looking for work. Essentially, it’s a brief synopses of who you are; it’s a means of telling potential employers about the skills and abilities you could provide for them.

WHAT’S THE POINT OF A CV?
When you send your CV to a prospective employer, it’s simply a means of attracting their attention; a way of saying “Look at me, I’m worth seeing” Only later at the interview stage, do you have a chance of convincing them you would be an excellent employee.

Your CV is part of a marketing strategy It’s the sales brochure or product packaging; its number one job is to attract the attention of the customer (in this case, a potential employer) and persuade them that the product (you) is what they’re looking for. In such a situation, modesty is not a virtue.

PAPER OR
ELECTRONIC?
Two surveys last year indicated that a majority of both jobseekers and recruiters now favour CVs being
submitted online, as opposed to on paper; reasons given for this included a “substantial” speed up of the recruitment process for all concerned (with either a knock-back

or invitation for an interview increasingly expected within seven days) and a greater ability to tailor both the CV and “covering e-mail” to the individual vacancy and company.

It should be pointed out that both of these surveys were conducted by an online recruitment specialist (Topjobs.co.uk), which has an obvious interest in promoting the value of “virtual” job-hunting. At the very least, however, having your CV in digital format means that it is much easier to make additions and changes without having to type out the whole CV again from scratch.

WHAT TO REMEMBER
Fundamentally, a winning CV should emphasise plenty of reasons as to why an employer should see you, and minimise any reasons why they shouldn’t. By being aware of both your strengths and weaknesses in relation to a particular job, you should be in the best position to put together an effective résumé and get that interview.

CVs - THE BASICS
Strictly speaking, there aren’t any rules about putting together a CV; that said, there are a number of general principles that particularly at this stage in your career, you would be foolish to ignore. Most CVs, when they arrive, are given no more than a minute’s attention, and at that the reader is more likely to be looking for reasons to reject candidates rather than accept them.
